So, setting Google aside, I put together a compact list of the vintage furniture shops in Brooklyn that will give you the best chance of finding beautiful and original items without overpaying for that vintage feel.
Another warehouse style thrift shop but less crowded than Mother of Junk. Not as huge but still a very large collection of furniture; tables, bookcases chairs, etc. Many of the pieces out front and near the entrance are good as new. There was a row of beautiful antique dressers outside the store and the most expensive of the batch was only $170! Amazing when you consider that the original retail price was somewhere north of $500. The owners are very friendly and helpful, and the pieces are generally in good condition with few to no blemishes.
This warehouse is full of not just vintage items but actual antiques; huge chests, hand painted armoires, and grandfather clocks. Anything you need, they will have it somewhere. They even deliver. Like the name says, they sell used furniture and clothing, but I would suggest you just come for the furniture. Though there is a huge pile of purses in the corner aisle you might want to dig through.
The best place to buy and sell used furniture in New York City is Chairish. It claims to be the best place for people who love design to buy and sell used pieces of their choosing. Chairish prescreens items to make sure only the best makes it onto the site.
If you want to buy on AptDeco, scan the listing on their website. They offer both new and used furniture options for interested parties. If the item arrives and some damages were unspecified, they need to report these to AptDeco within 24 hours of purchase for a partial refund on the product.
Etsy is one of the classic locations to buy and sell furniture. This website is not just a used furniture site - you can sell crafts, clothes, and everything in between. Used furniture fits right in with the mix, especially if your pieces are eclectic and artsy.
There are tens of thousands of people in NYC now who can barely afford living. They need furniture, but they cannot afford it. You, having excess furniture that needs to be disposed of, can help by donating furniture.
When you are done repurposing furniture, you might still have a lot of scrap left that needs to be thrown out. These may not be recyclable items, so be sure to check out an updated sanitation site to find out what to do with it.
Our ambition is for all stores to participate in Buy Back & Resale one day. However, if your store is not included to participate in this service, this may be due to certain local/county/state laws that place restrictions on all businesses. Our US Legal and Public Affairs teams will continue to address the stores where we cannot yet operate, and we will update you as soon as anything officially changes. We are working through the process for the following stores:
The Buy Back & Resell service is available for personally-used IKEA furniture only. The furniture must be fully assembled and fully functional. IKEA cannot accept any products that have been hacked, modified or altered in any way.

Thanks for your comments. My concern about Craigslist and Freecycle is bedbugs, as you pointed out. Incidentally, I interviewed the city of NY bedbug commission spokeswoman and a city entomologist for articles I wrote on bedbugs, and they both said that no spray will kill bedbugs in upholstered furniture. Heat is the only thing that will kill them. The cost of hiring an exterminator to put used furniture in a hot box outweighs the savings of used furniture.
